The Good, Bad and Beautiful of Violent Video Games

Violent RPG’s have a diverting impact on players as both good and bad come out playing them. Killer (...) a controlled game, creates a disparate dimension for isolated kids, as they become the Julius Caesar’s of their own world. They constitute the rules and are compelled to think out of the box in order to breakout from their boring school life. Hunting targets into public places like airports and then administering traps for the unsuspecting victims is how these kids discover their environment in their Lilliputian virtual bubble. They conduct themselves well enough in order to conceive a set of rules that (...) dictate the flowing of procedures in a manner that keeps everything from crumbling into chaos......

In many instances, these contentious games can (...) manipulate vulnerable teens into being socially awkward. Games like these can curtail self-control one has over themselves as they play such synthetic games with simulated violence. along with lesser self-control, they act with more aggression and incline towards audacious conduct (...) They can be provoked with considerable ease into violent acts. Also, (...) devious games like Grand Theft Auto advocate violence and this leads up to insecure teens taking it upon themselves, to solve petty issues using violence and social abuse. Furthermore, sandbox games like GTA are (...) never ending. They manage to draw the player in until he/she is addicted to it. According to the New York Times, violent games (...) can make players rude few minutes after playing. This can deter both inflicter and victim.

Besides (...) games like Killer can get people conversing about it. Even if it is online, the passionate players engage in robust discussions and debates of their opinions on the game. Conducive multiplayer games have also validated that keen players, vastly improve their teamwork and team building skills. Squads work smoothly together in order to win the esteemed game and achieve the prestige that comes along with victory. Teamwork is a significant skill that you use throughout your life, whether it be in offices or marriages. It also compels the players to leave their homes into the real world for better or for worse.

Although these shrewd games provide numerous opportunities for players to reinforce valuable skills, they can also inculcate reprehensible (...) or unethical values. Quite a few video games these days characterize women, as creatures, who are coerced to do anything you wish. They also have a hefty impression on what the troubled players think of the act of killing and what it really means. In the games, they get a simulated involvement of homicide and death which can taint the player's brain. Along with that, as the player kills, the weightage of killing slowly decreases. Killing an enemy player suddenly doesn't seem as remarkable as it was a few weeks ago.

Given that, RPG’s teach kids imperative lessons and skills like perseverance. In Killer, one has to stand firm in order to shatter through the target's defense and defeat the victim. When one endeavour fails, they remain motivated (...) and consider other methods. The plights that they face while contending buoys brain activity and matures them into problem solvers as well as critical thinkers. They make brisk and decisive decisions so that they can stay alive. Players also learn to manage and be conscious of themselves and their surroundings. In a study, researchers discovered that a player’s reflexes are broadly upgraded while playing such games. These are all skills that can be utilised in future life and playing sophisticated games is exactly what will galvanise this thinking.

RPG’s bring forth many great skills and advantages and are overall good for the players. In order for there to be control, there needs to be a balance that keeps players from being whitewashed and pulling off a Columbine. In the end, it’s not what content the game has, but the attitude that influences players.

“Play it with sorrow and you will feel hate. Play it with anger and you will feel vengeful. Play it with paranoia and you will feel confusion. Play it with empathy and you will feel compassion. play it with love and you will feel flattery. play it with hope and you will feel positive. play it with humor and you will feel joy. play it with God and you will feel the truth. play it without bias and you will feel peace. Don't play it at all and you will not feel a thing.” Inspired by Shannon Alder

A Masked but Imminent Scandal

Something scandalous is happening and it needs to stop immediately or else...

So many materials being made out of plastic are being produced daily but so few are going to dumps or recycling centres. So then where are the little styrofoam balls, plastic bags, general litter and also exfoliants in your shower scrubs. There could be many answers to that, but the most common and simplest answer would be: the oceans.

There are about 5 gyres on this planet: the North and South Pacific, the North and South Atlantic Gyres and the Indian Gyre. They are basically ocean currents formed by global wind patterns and Earth’s rotation. These are so immense and powerful that they drive the ‘ocean conveyor belt’ which is basically how the oceans move around the continents. These used to be massive areas of swirling water where the water would get sucked into the bottom. But now, they are swirling garbage patches.

In 1998, Capt. Charles Moore discovered that the North Pacific Gyres had acquired around 18 million tons of plastic. The weight of plastic on the oceans surface was about 6 times as much as the weight of plankton. He deducted that the only reasons landfills weren’t getting filled up to the brim was that most of the plastic waste managed to get sucked into these even vaster gyres. According to Plastic Oceans, we have produced and trashed more plastic into the seas in the last decade then we have produced over the whole of last century. From his travels in the North Pacific, he found out that a fish, only 2.5 inches long, had 84 pieces of plastic.

You might be misunderstanding plastic’s recyclability. Plastics are biodegradable but just not in a practical time frame. Plastics are compounds made of Carbon and Hydrogen. These compounds are extremely hard to break through. Naturally, only UV rays can break these apart. But since so much of the World’s plastic is in water, the plastic will be shielded by the water’s damp and cold conditions. Even after millions of years to come, some plastics may not have decomposed. Those who have, well; they’ll become small granules of plastic pellets that will be just the right size for some innocent sea creature.

According to Mr. Raisdana, he finds the fact that we have trashed more plastic in the last decade then we have produced in the decade before. “Even with all these environmentalist groups, we are still making a ton of plastic. The interesting thing is, even though we have come so far and are always told about how plastic is, we have not really done much about it.” When asked about how he has contributed to it, he says, “I have always taken bags to grocery stores instead of taking the plastic bags and while collecting vegetables. I also try and educate my kids about how the plastic toys that they buy eventually become into waste that goes into the ocean. But, I think everyone has a hand in this.” When asked about what would happen to the plastic if we stopped producing it, he stated “We’re going to need to find a way to collect all the plastic and do something with it. We can’t just pretend there’s no plastic if we can’t see it.” This reveals that even adults struggle to bring about change. Even though we understand about this problem, are we doing much?

Out of 22 students and 1 teacher, only 5 of them knew about gyres, let alone the plastic in them. This raises a serious problem that connects with that Mr. Raisdana talks about. Things that happen beyond our vision and hearing are ignored or often not even cared about. There is still hope, as Mr. Anthony Andrady, a senior research scientist, has pointed out that microbes might be able to evolve and mutate into species that could break down or even better, consume plastics. Till then, all we can do is hope.

A fellow writer, Roshan, also writing about plastics commented on this. “Gyres are natural water systems caused by tectonic plates moving. They can be very dangerous at times. They mostly end up sucking in plastics.” When asked about what the problem here is he stated, “The plastics are killing the ecosystems. The very fish that we eat are eating plastics before being caught in fisher nets. We’re slowly but surely going to run out of clean water at this rate.”

Do we really want this to become of our only planet? Can we contain the throwaway society, or has it become to widespread for anyone to stop? Can we afford this scandal to happen? Are we that willing to lay waste to our home planet? As people have said: “There is no Planet B.”

“All the King’s horses and all the King’s men, will never gather up all the plastic and put the ocean back together again.” by Charles Moore

The Reasons of Art

Practice. Practice your art till you feel like dropping. Don't stop. Keep going. Enjoy it. Do it like you were born to! Take that extra effort and push through it. Hone your skills till you could perform in front of the whole city. Set goals. Achieve those goals. Motivate yourself. Keep trying. Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outlier says that it takes 10,000 hours of pure concentrated practice to achieve mastery in that field. Do you want to achieve mastery in your art? Then work for it. Get your rhythm and get comfortable. Go out and perform because it can only do you good. Make every moment feel magical like you were in Hogwarts. Flow through it like it was water. Lose yourself in it and lose all sense of time. Go back in time and relive your favorite memories. Have a blast and enjoy every moment.

Art is not just music or drawing, it’s a language that cuts across all barriers. It brings out the personal strengths in you and helps you focus. It takes you to places, it makes you fantasize. It lasts long, something that will be there forever. Art says what words couldn’t possibly express. It gives you power over yourself. Moreover, it’s good to make things now and again. You don’t need a reason to, you need a reason not to make it.

At a Grade 8 assembly, the Mashed Potatoes got ready for performing in front of an very eager and restless bunch of students. As the band members filed into position, the crowd went dead silent. The drummer started the countdown, the guitarist started strumming, the pianist started playing soft chords and the singers got ready. As the instruments melded together, the singers began. Nobody talked for the 3 minutes that they performed. Every eye was on the band. Either the intricate finger movements of the guitarists or the nodding of the drummers head or even the pianist swinging his head from side to side.

As the song receded, the audience erupted into applause. Manini Banerjee, the guitarist of Mashed Potatoes said” I really enjoyed playing her guitar because she could share music and her thoughts. I really like playing my guitar because it gives me a sense of relief. Arjun Achar of 8JRa said “All the instruments were in ensemble and everything seemed perfect for the 3 minutes. The sound of all the instruments together made me forget my worries. The performance was great and I wish that I had the guts to perform and loose myself like that.”

What Do Sports Days Actually Mean?

Last year, there was a certain anxiety and wait for the 2 most arguably popular days in UWCSEA, the Sports Days. Both days were extremely fun-filled and students of Grade 7 relished the day. These were going to be the days when the mentor groups would compete for the glory of winning the Sports Days. Everyone knew how the day would unfold.

Out of all the interviews held, mostly everyone had loved the 2 days of sports. “I’d rather play video games than swim all day and run around on the field.” said one of the annoyed students. The eventual winners of Sports Day was 7 DSz. Kunal Daga from DSz said that “We worked really hard to keep fighting and win the points.” When asked about the team in a whole, Kunal said “I’m pretty sure everyone gave their best and were really motivated all through out.” Another student from DSz said “I’m glad that we won Sports Day because my friends were always nagging me about how I was really bad at sports. This shut them up.”

After a long day in the sun, the students were excited and waiting to know who won. Going bottom placed to first, the boo’s were loud. As soon as SMu was announced 2nd, the whole of DSz ran out and started giving each other high-fives. There was chaos as other classes blamed them of cheating and made other such ridiculous claims. Even through their best efforts, the teachers couldn’t calm down the students. As the pandemonium wore of, the teachers took control.

Even though they had lost, students from the losing teams were pretty cool about it. According to an unconfirmed source, they didn’t believe that their class could win at all but were happy to have taken part and have a lot of fun. While some believed that their class hadn’t put in 100% effort and were very disruptive to the team’s moral.

Overall, people seemed joyful as they exited out the Astro-turf. They had gotten their well-deserved break from the exhausting routine of Middle School work. Not only that but they had gotten a day where they could bond with their classmates. This was a day full of learning and collaboration even though it might not seem so. For the students this was just a fun day, but the big idea behind this was to bring the school together.
