Most kids wake up to a delicious breakfast and a nice shower, but this never happens in the dumpsite. The kids here wake up in the morning, already hungry from not having a proper dinner the previous night, knowing that they’re gonna have to continue starving because the there is no food in the house. Yet they still go outside into the mountains of trash and work, because thats the only way to for them to live.
According to http://www.poverty.com, approximately 21000 people die of hunger everyday. Yet for these people hunger isn’t their only problem. They have to deal with infections and diseases like AIDS, Pneumonia, Diarrhea, Tuberculosis, Malaria etc., which they can’t afford to cure. Yet the saddest part is that only few are given an education, so the vicious cycle known as poverty will continue.
When I was 10 years old, I got the chance to go to visit one of the schools for the kids who live and the dumpsite known as “Smoky Mountain”. Looking back outside of the bus I saw two children, who were at the top of one of the mountains of trash which was as tall as a real mountain, sorting through the trash. At that moment I didn’t real understand what exactly they were doing. A few minute after I reached the school. When the bus door opened, I was greeted by the horrendous smell of trash. Think of the worse smell you have ever smelt. This was 100 times worse than that. It was liking smelling a rotten fruit basket which was covered in rotten egg. The school was just old shipping containers put together.
I was led into a classroom by my teacher, and I was greeted by a class full of smiling children. All of the children looked like walking skeletons. They looked like they hadn’t eaten a morsel for days. Then I realized something.
At least 5 of them hadn’t had breakfast in the morning.
No food in the house.
2 or 3 of them were orphan
At least 9 of them had lost a parent
And 99% of them would have to go back the bloody dumpsite.
Even though all the kids knew this, there wasn't one kid who wasn’t happy. No matter how many struggles they face, they were still happier than most kids who live in the city. These kids are given a chance to break the cycle through education. They could have a future in which this dump didn’t exist.
Yet even will all the NGO’s in the world, it isn’t enough. There are still millions of children that are stuck in poverty, and it will stay that way unless you do something. Unless you do your part there will be children the number 21000 will not decrease. So do you part and help create a future where no one will have to worry if they will be able to have their next meal.
